Craftsman

Born on the island of Mallorca, Spain, a long time ago, Jose came to the United States to study engineering at the University of Maryland.  After graduation, he went to work for a large international engineering company until he took early retirement to pursue a new vocation in furniture making.  Jose attended the College of the Redwoods, Fort Bragg, California, school of furniture making, headed by the world famous artist, craftsman and author James Krenov, who had a big influence in Jose’s style and philosophy of wood-working. 

 

During the next 18 years, Jose built furniture and turned bowls in the middle of wine country in Sonoma, California.  During these years, he custom built bedroom sets, dining room sets, chairs, etc. and some eclectic pieces at the customers’ requests. Jose was the president of the Sonoma County Woodworkers Association for two years, VP for one year and show coordinator for an additional two years.  During this period, he exhibited in numerous venues, including invitational and juried shows.  At the Artistry in Wood show at the Sonoma County Museum of Art, he won eight awards over the years, from  Best of Show to Award of Excellence.

Joe and Catherine, his wife of 25 years and great supporter of his vocation, moved to Maui two years ago.  He continues to build furniture of Hawaiian woods as well as other woods of the world and turn bowls of island timber like Koa, Milo, Norfolk Pine, Mango, Etc.
